Hello!

I have a Motorola V220 and would like to do the following:

1. Update the software. The installed version is: R364_G_0B.D1.09R. It is also branded by O2 Germany. Is there any safe firmware to use? Will it remove the branding too?

2. I would like to extract the system ringtones. Is that somehow possible?

Hi there!

Fortunately, the Motorola V220 is quite difficult to brick or SIM-lock it unlike the RAZR2 V8, so here is the answers.



1. It is strongly recommended to dump the entire memory chip using Flash&Backup 3 before any flashing actions.



2. You need to dump CG2 flex separately to get the ringtones. Just open dumped CG2 in the FlexParser04 program to unpack it.

3. The most new and stable firmware for V220 are 2.23R and 2.2FR:

3.1. R365_G_0B.D2.23R
3.2. R365_G_0B.D2.2FR

These firmwares are clean so any carrier's branding will be purged after flashing. It is best to flash your V220 using the RSD Lite 3.8 flashing tool.

All the programs and tools that I mentioned in this post are available in a Windows XP virtual machine image which can be downloaded in this thread:

1. Can I use the previous boot sound and animation? Will that work?
2. Can I send the games from the previous flash file to the phone?

I also noticed after flashing both V8 and V220 that there is 1 missing call icon all the time. Is there any way to remove it?

1. You can change the "boot splash" via hacking firmware (bypass RSA sign + replace boot splash patch) and "boot animation" using SEEM edition but it is not trivial. I recommend leaving the standard animation with color bubbles because all Motorola phones on P2K platform turned on this way

2. Yes. Just install these Java games from "kjava" folder of your previously unpacked CG2 using Moto Midlet Manager program.

3. Yes.
3.1. Check out languages list description here: Motorola Language Packs Description 2007
3.2. Find the firmware for V220 with the required LangPack version here: https://firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/V...C%20RSD%20Lite/
3.3. Flash only CG4 (LangPack) code group of downloaded firmware using Flash&Backup 3 program.

It is not missing call but "active line" icon. Yes, you can hide it using SEEMs editing by P2KTools VS or P2K Advance Editor programs.

You can customize WakeUp & GoodBye media in the P2K Advanced Editor.



Run P2K Advanced Editor when P2K Tools VS is active then click "Connect in P2K mode" button.

IIRC, you can even change boot splash there but only "Blue" and "Original" variants available. Try to activate "Blue" instead of "Original", perhaps this is old boot splash from previous firmware.

Hmm, that's strange.

Are you currently using the R365 platform not R364? 0.85.2YEARS supports only R365 by default.

Yeah, I am on R365. I have also checked this in the bootloader.

You can try the official MidWay 2.8 program for installing Java applications.



1. Enable Java download in P2K Tools VS then reboot phone.

2. Close P2K Tools VS and disconnect phone from PC.

3. Go to the "Settings => Java Settings => Java App Loader" on the phone.

4. Connect phone to PC.

5. Run MidWay 2.8 and open JAD file of your game.

6. Click install on the phone.

Do I need to install some sort of P2K drivers? Windows XP doesn't show up any unknown hardware though. It also recognizes the phone. Not sure why P2K is not working though.
I also noticed that all P2K applications I tried, hang or don't respond after "Status: connected" appears.

Here is a small overview of the situation


I am using the following:

Oracle VirtualBox
Windows XP Professional; Version 2002; Service Pack 3; likely x86
3.50 GB RAM / 128 MB VRAM



Following problems occur:

P2K Tools VS starts freezing without reaction after connecting the phone.
All P2K tools freeze when connecting the phone.


The phone is being recognized as:

MOTOROLA INC. - MOTOROLA PHONE (V220) (normal mode)
MOTOROLA INC. - S MODE NEPTUNE LTE (bootloader mode)



I hope this gives you a better impression of the system setup.

Oracle VM VirtualBox is the root of your problem with freezing P2K programs. There is an inferior implementation of the USB stack in VirtualBox...

Sorry that I forgot to warn you about this well known problem with VirtualBox. Just try to install the free version of VMware Workstation Player then download the image with Windows XP SP3 with all pre installed Motorola modding software from the link and all P2K program should work without freeze problems.

Now it worked successfully.

May I ask where can I find the startup and shutdown sound in the previous firmware?
I searched in the "audio" folder but I can't find them.

Probably embedded inside CG1. Were these su/sd sounds from previous firmware MIDI, MP3, or Monophonic Tone Generator sequences? Were they stock or O2 Germany?

They surely are stock. I not really sure but I think they were MIDI sequences.

unfortunately, I only remember that the firmware started with R364. I do have the backup of the previous firmware as you instructed, but it has converted into FB3.

Just open your CG2 binary dumb in any HEX editor program like HxD: https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/

Then push "Ctrl+F" and try to find text string which starts from "SE85" substring, e.g.:

Is this the pu sound you're looking for? Recorded from a rare prototype version of Motorola V220 (V200) with a funlight feature.

It is not a file at all, it is just some monophonic tone generator sequence which is embedded in firmware itself (CG1).

If you want to get this pu melody in V220 instead of "Bubbles MP3" you just need to edit some SEEM setting, but try to delete "Start~Up.mp3" file first.

Something else I just thought: Is there any way to update the SSL certificates? Is that useful at all?

There is no way to update SSL certs known to me, sorry.

Perhaps Mini Opera 4.0 will work on the V220 if you want access to Internet but this is very doubtful.

Changing the phone date to 2005 helps if some Java apps do not start due to an error with expired certificates.

I definitely remember that I had Mini Opera running on a Motorola C650 phone (this is twin brother of V220 but in bar form-factor) in my youth in 2005-2006 years Perhaps it was Opera 2.0 but idk if its servers are working now.

By the way, do you know what the stock shutdown animation looks like? Do you have one as a gif?

Hey, I checked my BackUps from 2004 and found versions of Opera Mini that 100% worked on the C650:

I think these apps will work on V220, but I doubt that the Opera Mini proxy servers are still online.
