0. Prepare two GIF animation files with 240x320 resolution, and put them in your memory card. One is for startup animation, the other one is for shutdown animation.

For example, I use two files : tux_on.gif and tux_off.gif, and put them in a folder called 'MyGIFs' in my memory card.

(Images are taken from "Clean-series" theme for E680i. Credit goes to Blackhawk of Motorolafans for such a beautiful yet efficient theme.)


1. Telnet to your E2 (telnet 192.168.16.2).

2. Go to /ezx_user/download/appwrite/setup/theme directory

cd /ezx_user/download/appwrite/setup/theme


3. Find 2 files : "themefiles.cfg" and "User_0.chm" (ls).

4. Create backups of those files, just in case.

cp themefiles.cfg themefiles.cfg.bak
cp User_0.chm User_0.chm.bak


4. Copy those files to your memory card.

cp themefiles.cfg /mmc/mmca1/themefiles.cfg
cp User_0.chm /mmc/mmca1/User_0.chm


5. Reconnect your E2 to your PC as Memory Card.

6. Edit the two files you copied using WinXP's WordPad or any Linux/UNIX-compatible text editor. Don't use Notepad.

6a. Edit "themefiles.cfg"

Change this :

[/usr/data_resource/poweroff/splash_powerdown_ani_full.gif]
MotoTheme = 0
MotoTheme(Modified) = 1
[/usr/data_resource/poweron/splash_powerup_ani_full.gif]
MotoTheme = 0
MotoTheme(Modified) = 1


Into this (depends on file path and names of your GIF animation) :

[/mmc/mmca1/MyGIFs/tux_off.gif]
MotoTheme = 0
MotoTheme(Modified) = 1
[/mmc/mmca1/MyGIFs/tux_on.gif]
MotoTheme = 0
MotoTheme(Modified) = 1


Save and close the file.

6b. Edit "User_0.chm"

Change this :

PowerOffScreen = /usr/data_resource/poweroff/splash_powerdown_ani_full.gif
PowerOnScreen = /usr/data_resource/poweron/splash_powerup_ani_full.gif


Into this (depends on file path and names of your GIF animation) :

PowerOffScreen = /mmc/mmca1/MyGIFs/tux_off.gif
PowerOnScreen = /mmc/mmca1/MyGIFs/tux_on.gif


Save and close the file.

7. Next step is to copy the files back to the /ezx_user/download/appwrite/setup/theme directory. Telnet again to your phone.

8. Copy the files back to the original directory.

cp /mmc/mmca1/themefiles.cfg /ezx_user/download/appwrite/setup/theme/themefiles.cfg
cp /mmc/mmca1/User_0.chm /ezx_user/download/appwrite/setup/theme/User_0.chm


9. Exit telnet, disconnect, and restart your phone.

10. Enjoy the new startup and shutdown animations.
